A VLSI Crossbar Switch with Wrapped Wave Front Arbitration

چکیده
Crossbar switch is a key component of communication switches used in networks. Allocation of resources has a direct impact on packet transmission. A poor allocation results in long transmission delays. Hence, switches must include an arbiter that efficiently allocates the crossbar’s resources. In this brief, a novel VLSI CMOS implementation of a high performance wrapped wave front arbitration (WWFA) for crossbar switches is described. Arbitration time is one of the critical factors that affect network performance. WWFA requires a two-dimensional arbitration that incorporates a rotating priority to provide fair arbitration. In this brief, we describe the design and implementation of this arbiter. The arbiter is capable of performing an arbitration in 1.15 ns using 0.5m technology, for a 4 4 crossbar. We also include the description of interface and crosspoint (CP) control circuitry, i.e., request-acknowledge circuit and CP controller circuit respectively.

Fault-Tolerant Arbitration in Multichip Crossbar Switches
A major problem in the design of large multichip crossbar networks is the latency associated with the centralized controller used to arbitrate requests. We present a solution to reduce this latency and also provide fault-tolerance by the use of multiple controllers that can operate concurrently. This paper concentrates on crossbars that are constructed using one-sided crosspoint switches, as su...
متن کاملDesynchronized Two-Dimensional Round-Robin Scheduler for Input Buffered Switches
We propose a new arbitration algorithm, called the desynchronized two-dimensional round-robin (D2DRR), for input queued packet switches in which each input port maintains a separate logical queue for each output. D2DRR is an enhanced version of 2DRR, and thus improves fairness over 2DRR without a starvation problem. Iterative maximal matching schemes including iSLIP yield better throughput with...
متن کاملA two-dimensional scalable crossbar matrix switch architecture
Rapid growth of Internet traffic causes a new challenge in the design of high-speed switches. One of main design issues for high-speed switches is a scalability problem. This paper proposes a scalable crossbar matrix (SCM) switch architecture, which consists of multiple crossbar switch units(XSU) with virtual output queues(VOQs) at the inputs and single-cell scheduling decomposition buffers(SDB...

Input-output queued switches have been widely considered as the most feasible solution for large capacity packet switches and IP routers. The challenge is to develop a high speed and cost-effective arbitration scheme to maximize the switch throughput and delay performance for supporting multimedia services with various quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. In this paper, we propose a ping-pong...
متن کاملWeighted Arbitration Algorithms with Priorities for Input-Queued Switches with 100% Throughput
Input buffered switches have the strong advantage of efficient crossbar usage. Virtual Output Queueing (VOQ) has to be established to circumvent the head-of-line (HOL) blocking which limits the throughput to 58.6%. Arbitration algorithms control the access to the switch fabric in each time slot. Weighted algorithms achieve 100% throughput with lowest delays under all admissible traffic even und...
